The Buffalo Bills…Still Fighting For A Super Bowl Win

In 1960, the Buffalo Bills joined the American Football League. They won AFL titles in 1964 and 1965, before joining the NFL as part of the merger in 1970. Since then, the team has not won a league championship.

One of three New York professional football teams, the Bills are the only team that actually plays their home games in New York. Both the Jets and the Giants play in New Jersey. In 2008, the Buffalo Bills became the only team in NFL history to play regular season games in Canada, when they started their “Toronto Series” which will include eight games spread over five seasons.

Off the field, the Bills like many other NFL teams are very involved in the community. Not only do they entertain their fans, but they also help feed the needy in their area. They are very active in promoting health and exercise to fight childhood obesity with their participation in programs such as the What Moves U challenge and their own youth football programs. They support other causes as well including blood drives, breast cancer awareness programs, and drug prevention programs.

The Buffalo Bills cheerleaders are known as the Buffalo Jills. The Jills have a special squad for appearances and participation in events. The “Ambassador Jills” are not part of the dance squad that you see on the sidelines and at halftime, but they are an integral part of the Jills squad just the same. These women are responsible for working at each home game, making public appearances, and visiting troops both at home and overseas. The job of being a Buffalo Bills cheerleader is a tough one and these women are very active, accomplished, and energetic.

Although they may not have won any Super Bowls, the Buffalo Bills managed to make it into four Super Bowls in four consecutive years. From 1991-1994, the Bills were present at every game, losing all of them.

Ralph Wilson Stadium, also known as “The Ralph” was built for the Bills in 1973 in order to replace the Buffalo War Memorial Stadium. With seating for almost 74,000 people, this stadium is the largest stadium in New York.

The Ralph is known for its wind currents that often change direction and create swirling patterns, making it difficult for kickers to accurately aim the ball. It is also an example of one of the oldest instances of naming rights being bought in the league. Rich Products bought naming rights in 1972 in a deal that lasted for 25 years.  When the time came to renew the contract the company chose not to buy new rights because of the higher prices charged today. The stadium was renamed after the founder of the team.

The Buffalo Bills are a great source of pride in their community. From the charitable works to the exciting games, this team is one of the most fun to watch and the Bills experience is not to be missed.
